พลาสมิด(Plasmid,Prokaryotic cell)
พลาสมิดเป็นดีเอ็นเอ(DNA)นอกนิวเคลียส พบในแบคทีเรียหลายชนิด มียีนซึ่งทำให้แบคทีเรียมีคุณสมบัติพิเศษ เช่น ต้านทานต่อยาปฏิชีวนะ หรือ ผลิตสารอื่นๆได้ มีคุณสมบัติเป็นหน่วยที่จำลองตัวเองได้ บางชนิดมีคุณสมบัติในการส่งถ่ายดีเอ็นเอจากเซลล์เดิมไปยังอีกเซลล์หนึ่งได้(Self transmission plasmid)
Chloroplast DNA(cpDNA)
CpDNA มีลักษณะเป็ฯวงแหวน มีขนาด 30-200 kpb ประกอบด้วยดีเอ็นเอประมาณ 150 โมเลกุล/คลอโรพลาส โครงสร้างของคลอโรพลาสจีโนม มีลักษณะที่ conservative มากกว่าจีโนมของไมโตรคอนเดีย และโครโมโซม และมีลักษระการถ่ายทอดพันธุกรรมแบบ maternal inheritance ยกเว้นพืชในกลุ่ม Conifer เป็นแบบ paternal inheritance
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)
MtDNA มีลักษณะเป็นวงแหวน มีขนาดแตกต่างกันมากทั้งระดับ ชนิดและกลุ่มของสิ่งมีชีวิต(16-2000 kbp) แต่มีจำนวนยีนไม่แตกต่างกนั(-20 ยีน) มีลักษณะการถ่ายทอดพันธุกรรมแบบ maternal inheritance และมีอัตราการเกิดการกลายพันธ์สูงกว่าดีเอ็นเอของนิวเคลียส 3 ถึง 5 เท่า โดยในแต่ละเซลล์ประกอบไปด้วยไมโตรคอนเดียประมาณ 10,000 ไมโตคอนเดรียและแต่ละไมโตคอนเดรียมี mtDNA ประมาณ 2-10 ซ้ำ
ในไวรัสมีเฉพาะดีเอ็ฯเอหรืออาร์เอ็นเอ แต่ในแบคทีเรียและสิ่งมีชีวิตชั้นสูงมีโปรตีนเป็นส่วนประกอบด้วยซึ่งเรียกว่า โครมาติน หรือโครโมโซม ซึ่งมีขนาดแตกต่างกันมากตามชนิดของสิ่งมีชีวิตตั้งแต่พันถึงพันล้านคู่เบส เลยทีเดียว ในโปรคาริโอตขนาดของ cmDNA (จีโนม) มีความสัมพันธุ์กับจำนวนของยีนในยูคาริโอต จะไม่มีความสัมพันธ์กัน(C-value paradox)
